Gateway was founded on September 5, 1985 outside of Sioux City, Iowa by two men named Ted Waitt and Mike Hammond. The company was originally called the Gateway 2000. Because the company was located in Iowa, the company thought they would use the cow as their mascot because most people think of Iowa the think of farms. So the company began selling their computers in boxes that look like cows.
To raise the bar on their company the removed the 2000 from their company name in 1998. They also moved their company from Iowa to California in 1998. After the dot com bust happened the company suffered a little in the computer sales department as did most dot com companies. But they had not recovered any of their losses so in 2004, the company agreed to close 188 of their retail stores.
In March 2004, Gateway bought the Personal Computer Emachines and slowly they felt the rise of popularity again. Some of the best models Gateway has are the NX100X, CX210, NX260X, NX560 and the NX860 series. They have started to re campaign to sell the gateway desk tops at great prices. Gateway is a great company and they make an excellent computer and just because they had a slump doesn’t mean their product isn’t one of the best.
